No. Curiosity > credentials. Biopunk is beginner-friendly by design — scientists, product designers, software engineers, and creatives all welcome. Mentors run intro workshops and a lab safety officer supervises the bench. If you're open-minded and hungry to build, you're already qualified.
Yes — no entry fee, ever. That's the whole contrast with iGEM, where teams pay roughly €7,700–€8,700 before anyone travels. At a Biopunk, the expensive part (reagents, DNA, sequencing, lab time) is covered by in-kind sponsors, and money flows toward participants as prizes.
Yes. Plenty of winning projects are software, AI, or design. But the thing that makes Biopunk different from every other hackathon is the wet lab — so if your idea can touch a bench, we'll help you get it there.
The prototype weekend is open to everyone. Lab week is where selection kicks in: teams that pitch a feasible, safe, green-lit experiment advance to the bench with dedicated workspace, mentorship, and reagents. It's a two-phase build — not everyone advances, and that's the point.
Expected — ideas mutate. As long as the pivot stays inside the biosafety envelope (BSL-1, non-human, non-clinical) and your Lab & Safety Lead signs off, evolve away. That's science.
Teams of 2–4 organisms. No lone wolves — packs can be formed onsite at the team-formation mixer. Mixed backgrounds (tech, bio, design, chaos) are encouraged.

Biopunk favors building from scratch, in the moment — no recycled ideas. Bring your skills, your curiosity, and your own hardware/wetware if you want, but the build happens during the event.
A laptop, a notebook, and an open mind. The lab provides the bench, equipment, and reagents; sign up on the Discord ahead of time for team formation and pre-event workshops. You can also bring your own hardware or wetware.
Yes, when it's kept inside the envelope Biopunk is designed around: BSL-1 — well-characterized, non-pathogenic organisms (E. coli K-12, baker's yeast, standard cloning strains) on open benches. Every participant completes a safety induction before unsupervised access, the lab's safety officer supervises, and every project passes a written risk assessment at the pitch stage.
The pitch gate rules out anything human-subject (including your own samples or self-experimentation), animal work, clinical claims, gain-of-function, select agents, or anything above BSL-1. Under the get-and-give ethos of this community, projects are documented openly in the gallery so the next team can learn from them — like open-source software. Specific IP terms are set by each event's organizer and any track sponsor, so read your event's rules. Rule of thumb: you keep your work and your portfolio; sponsors get visibility and recruiting access, not ownership.

No. Biopunk is independent, but borrows openly from both: MLH's league branding, open organizer guide, and judging science, and iGEM's scientific rigor and biosafety culture. MLH's organizer guide is Creative-Commons licensed, which is why so much of the playbook adapts so cleanly.
