Biology deserves a portfolio culture.

Software built a whole meritocracy on projects you can show. You learn by building, you build in public, and the work speaks louder than the diploma. Biology never got that on-ramp. Biopunk is the movement to build it.

How software works

Almost every programmer is partly self-taught. You can learn free, build projects at hackathons, stack them into a public GitHub, and get hired on the strength of what you shipped. The portfolio is the credential. Hackathons were the engine that normalized it — a weekend, a team, a demo, a prize.

How biology works

To touch a bench, you historically needed a lab, a faculty sponsor, and usually a PhD. The knowledge is learnable — the access is gated. As one bioinformatician put it, academia can feel like "an elitist community where you barely get taken seriously without a PhD." The curiosity was never the barrier. The keycard was.

The pieces already exist Community labs offer BSL-1 benches for $10–100/month. GitHub is increasingly a "digital lab bench." Cheap open hardware and $15 sequencing exist. The raw materials for a portfolio culture in biology are all here — nobody had assembled them into a repeatable on-ramp. That's the whole job.

iGEM proved the thesis — then priced it out.

Give iGEM its due: over 20 years it turned hands-on synthetic biology into a talent pipeline. 100,000+ alumni. 300+ ventures — Ginkgo Bioworks, Benchling, Opentrons, Asimov — trace back to it. It showed the world that team-based, project-based synbio creates scientists, portfolios, and companies. The outcomes are exactly what Biopunk wants. The access model is the problem.

In their own words A University of Waterloo iGEM team wrote a public critique of their own competition: "Compared to most other university-level team competitions… iGEM is incredibly expensive… requiring such a high barrier of entry only serves to keep this opportunity from those who cannot [afford it]." Even an MIT team's 2018 budget hit $74,592 — "if a well-resourced school like MIT has trouble finding funding, I can't imagine what it's like at smaller schools."

Biopunk is not anti-iGEM. It's iGEM's outcomes — the network, the portfolio, the industry pipeline — delivered through a hackathon's accessible, repeatable, get-paid-to-win economics.

No entry fee, ever. The reagents that make wet-lab work expensive are covered by in-kind sponsorship, not the participant's wallet.

No faculty sponsor required. A licensed community lab and a safety officer replace the institutional keycard.

Public galleries turn each build into a permanent portfolio piece — the compounding, GitHub-style record biology has lacked.

The one line iGEM spent 20 years proving that hands-on team synbio creates talent, portfolios, and companies. Biopunk simply removes the paywall and the PhD gate — and pays participants instead of charging them.

Even iGEM

Validates the format

iGEM now runs its own "Startups BioHackathon" — a 48-hour weekend pitch event. The format is recognized as valuable; it's just bolted onto the paid competition instead of being the free on-ramp.

What's missing everywhere else is the middle: most "biohackathons" stop at slideware. Biopunk's subsidized lab week is the piece that turns a pitch into a result.
